Nursery reveal

As an interior designer, I come up with room schemes on a daily basis for clients, but when it comes to designing for ME?  That’s a whole other ball game.  I don’t know why its nearly impossibly to settle on a design for myself, maybe its because I’m a Libra, maybe its because I know how many options are out there…I have no idea!  But this nursery did NOT come easy.  I had an idea in my mind for the longest time that for some reason just was not working, and now I’m at a place where I’m happy where its gone.  Hopefully this kid will like it as much!

As a starting point, I knew that black and white would play a huge role in the room…originally I was toying with some wallpaper ideas, but in the end went with a simple colorblocking for the room that allowed the color from Will’s budding art collection to take center stage above.  And for the record, I would have gone with this color scheme if I had had a girl too…I find it timeless and easy to accessorize to get the color in there.  I chose art that weren’t all necessarily for kids, and mixed in some tactile pieces like the pompom mobile and vintage W.  For furniture, I went with pieces that didn’t cost a ton, but were still modern and would carry through his toddler years.  The biggest splurge was probably the glider, but it was the most comfortable one I tried and since I’d be doing the bulk of his nursing there, I figured I might as well be comfy.  Its classic enough to work in our living room once he’s outgrown snuggling in it with me.

When it came to framing art, I already had a bunch of West Elm and IKEA white frames, but for the larger or newer pieces like the map or Hulk photo above, I worked with Simply Framed and they couldn’t have been easier to work with.  To stick with the white theme when framing the art, I used their Gallery White frame, but they have tons to choose from if thats not your style.  I liked how it worked well with my existing frames, and sending the art to them was a breeze.

Birth announcements from Minted

minted birth announcement

Happy New Year everyone!  Hope you had a wonderful time celebrating the holidays with your families and friends!  Normally by this time I’ve sent out my holiday cards thanks to my friends over at Minted, but since this year I welcomed my son so close to the holidays, I just could not get my sh*t together with a newborn hanging all over me, so I’m going with a new year’s birth announcement instead!  (Mom’s out there, you feel me right?)

I’ve always loved how many options Minted has for designs, and especially love so many of their announcement cards.  I’m a big fan of keeping it simple so a lot of their geometric or typographic designs really spoke to me, but in the end I went with the Baby Bunting design in black and white because it was very reminiscent of my baby shower.  I’ve never been a huge “pastel” fan anyway, so the graphic nature of this one really worked for me and my aesthetic.  Here are some other designs I was considering…there are so many to choose from for every persons taste!

We received our announcements in exchange for an honest review, but I’m a fan of all of Minted’s products and absolutely love working with them!

My graphic black and white baby shower!

baby shower banner

I’m not one for a fuss being made over me, but I gotta say my baby shower was pretty damn awesome!  I dont think I’ve ever had a party so quintessentially ME before, and I’ve got my friends Minhee & Jainé to thank for their creative direction in it.  (I guess after working on a book together, you really get to know a person!)  Keep scrolling to see all the showery goodness from the day! (I’m going to keep the photos of guests to a minimum in case they’re camera shy, but there’s plenty of inspiration to be had)

black and white baby shower invite

The scene was really set with Minhee’s invitations for the day….using my favorite color green and a punch of graphic black and white for this baby boy, she used an idea from our book, Weddings in Color, as the basis.  I just love that oversized wax seal with a monogram she created!

Flowermuse provided the gorgeous white flowers that the girls arranged for the table in clusters.  I didn’t realize it then (there was so much going on!), but it was very similar to what I had done for my wedding, so it was a nice tie in to that.  It was also totally modern and easy to pull together too!

The monogram even carried out onto customized napkins and cocktail stirrers!

Minhee had asked my parents to send over pictures of me as a baby to blow up and hang around the space.  Green balloons and garlands she made added to the decor for the walls.

If a black and white cookie isn’t the perfect favor for a party like this, then I don’t know what is!

Shake & Share Media was on hand with an awesome photobooth for guests to turn their pictures into a guestbook for me.   I just love how all the pictures came out, and they made great souvenirs for guests as well!

I can’t remember when I first had a taste of Nine Cakes mint chocolate chip cake, but once I did, I knew I had to have it for whatever event I had coming up next!  Its so delicious, and the leftovers have been great for those minty pregnancy cravings I’ve been having.

The day went by so quickly, but it was definitely filled with lots of love!  Big thank you to all the hostesses for the baby shower: Minhee, Jainé, my mom, Raakhee, Anne, and Kiki!

So in case you didn’t know, I’m an interior designer by trade.  I’ve been doing it for 9 years, and when I tell you its infinitely easier to design for someone else than yourself, believe it!  I’ve been going back and forth on nursery designs for weeks, so thought I would share a couple of directions with you that will lead up to what we actually do in there.  We know we’ve having a boy, so I’ve liked the idea of having a graphic neutral room, but still have it have a pop of something.  Black and white is an obvious choice, but I don’t necessarily want to have the room be totally dark (though I might feel differently when this kid decides he doesn’t want to sleep!)  Going slightly lighter to a charcoal grey will probably be the way to go.

Before even BEING pregnant, I saw the Land of Nod Carousel crib in green (see below) and thought for SURE I would want to use this for my eventual baby…green is my absolute favorite color and theirs really is the perfect shade of kelly.  But Chad’s been giving me some pushback on it, so its been making me rethink it, and eventually I had trouble working it into anything I wanted to do.  I’m devastated, but will press on!  There will be green somewhere in this room, I swear it!

So thats where we’re at right now…in the coming weeks I’ll show you guys how I thought some of these designs would come together in renderings!

Hitting the 3rd trimester!

I haven’t really been talking about my pregnancy much here, other than the weekly photos I’ve been sharing on Instagram (#bklynbump), but its definitely been quite a trip.  The first trimester pretty much just sucked wit nausea hitting me primarily in the afternoons and evenings.  The second trimester went too quickly but was finally where I felt a little more like myself, except for my giant swollen potato feet & acid reflux, and now I just hit the third trimester so its all systems go until November when this kid is scheduled to come out.

I’ve been trying to limit how much I’ve been reading or finding out as we go since I’ve had such bad anxiety in the past, though I’ve been surprisingly calm thus far.  Just trying to not overthink things I think….ignorance might really be bliss for me!  Anyone else like that?  Just letting things happen as they will and not over-read everything?

Over the next few weeks I’ll post some more baby stuff from inspiration for the nursery, to my baby shower and what I ACTUALLY did with the nursery (definitely wasn’t what I thought it was going to be), so I hope you won’t mind me sharing…I promise it won’t be all babyville around here!

While Oeuf calls this genius piece of furniture a 2 in 1 system, I actually consider it 3.  The Fawn is the newest piece in their furniture line that goes from bassinet to crib to toddler bed! Pretty handy for those tight apartment spaces, don’t you think?

Modern pink ombré baby shower

confetti baby shower invitation

Pink is a tough color for me.  I’ve always been a green girl myself, but when you’ve got a mama-to-be who absolutely LOVES pink, you make that mama happy!  Such was the case for the baby shower that Minhee from Paper+Cup and I threw for our dear friend (and book photographer) Jainé of Brklynview Photography!  Surprisingly enough, for never having thrown a baby shower before, it all came together pretty seamlessly….it certainly helps when you’ve got an unspoken language and understanding between your co-host after having worked together on a book for the last year!  Jainé already knew she wanted to do it at iCi, a local favorite that has the most perfect all white event space upstairs, so we just had to deck it out!  Minhee and I went for a modern pink, keeping it pretty simple but graphic at the same time.  She did the invitations and overall signage, while I handled the decor, flowers and favors.  With a little help from some friends, I think we pulled it off pretty well!

The invitations were silk screened in bright pink onto glassine envelopes that held pink confetti from Knot & Bow.  The guests loved it, and it gave a good idea of what was to come.

Minhee took sheets of acrylic and and back painted them using various techniques for table signage.  Even though each were a little different, they all looked cohesive by using the same pink and font for the decals on top.  She also had the great idea of getting baby photos of Jainé and tinting them in various shades of pink to hang around the space.

iCi has a lovely mirror in the space that needed some decorating, so with a bit of decal magic and a hot pink garland from Paper Fox LA, we jazzed it up nicely!

Since Jainé had mentioned once that she liked ombré, we figured that the most dynamic place to put that to work would be the centerpiece, especially knowing how iCi likes to set up their tables.  Out of curiosity, I wanted to see how difficult it would be to pull off something like this myself, so I worked with Flowermuse who provided all the gorgeous blooms for the day.  A few days before the event, they sent over boxes of peonies, ranunculus and roses, all perfectly packed and ready for prepping.  Depending on how full I wanted the blooms to get for the big day, they sent easy to follow directions on how to take care of the flowers and how to get them to open when I wanted.  Couldn’t have been simpler, and I had an apartment smelling like a fabulous flower shop for a few days to boot!  For vases, I ordered a bunch from a restaurant web supply store where bud vases were around a $1 each in varying shapes.  They ended up being an extra favor for guests at the end of the brunch too which was nice.   (This also would work really well for a bridal shower, just sayin’!)

The seating cards were a project I did on my Cricut Explore Air…once they were all cut out, I used some hot pink gouache paint and put my calligraphy skills to work writing out everyones name.

Years ago I had picked up all the copies I could find of Sharon Montroses’s Ménagerie book off Amazon because I always thought they’d make great baby shower guest books, and they really do!  Minhee added the fun bookmark so we could keep our spot.

To keep it a little exciting, we had 2 activities set up…one was a card where people would list wishes for the baby, and the other was a very competitive game of baby bingo!

Betsy of Nine Cakes (who ALSO worked on the book with us!) did this amazing confetti cake that was pink velvet inside!  So yummy, and so adorable on the little rabbit cake stand from Imm Living.  I worked with Little Cat Design Co. to come up with a cheeky cake topper that was playful and worked with our theme.

All in all, we had an awesome time with friends and family, and I might even appreciate pink a little more 🙂  Big thanks to Sasithon Photography who took all these great pictures!!

Favorite gifts for new mamas and babies

momma and baby gifts

It used to be that my years were filled with weddings, and now they’re filled with baby showers and births!  I love being the auntie that spoils the kid, but I also like to think of the momma as well since she’s pretty much doing all the work…these are a few gifts I’ve been giving lately that I absolutely love!

1. Roxy Marj bear blanket | The sweetest little blanket I’ve ever seen…now they come in a bunch of different animals, and they’re perfect for baby photoshoots and for tummy time on the floor

2. Freshly Picked Moccasins | These moccasins have pretty much blown up at this point right?  And for good reason, they come in a ton of different colors and sized for babies and walkers

3. Mr. Boddington birth certificate | I don’t know what a standard birth certificate looks like, but I can guarantee its not as beautiful as this one designed by Mr. Boddington

4. JellyCat stuffed bunny | JellyCat’s are quite literally the softest stuffed animals I’ve ever felt, so every baby I know is getting one!

5. Artifact Uprising wooden box | Artifatc Uprising boxes would make a great time capsule of the first year of photos and milestones

6. The Baby Owner’s Manual | This book is just for fun, since its clear that the babies are the ones that are running the show

7. Hello Apparel onesie and shirt | This shirt and onesie are pretty indicative of what happens during the first few months for momma and baby, but cute nonetheless.

8. Hatch to Hospital box | This hospital set is purely for mom’s comfort, so if you’re the lucky one to get it for her, you’ll be her best friend for life!

9. Thief & Bandit onesie | Cute onesies!  C’mon, babies just can’t get enough of those!
