Naked cake party

I love a good skills class for expanding my horizons, so this cake workshop hosted by Paper Heart Patisserie is a great idea!  It would be super fun to take a bunch of girlfriends or to have as an activity at a bridal or baby shower!

From Paper Heart Patisserie: The saying “Less is More” has certainly been making an impact in the cake department lately. Naked cakes, layered cakes with minimal buttercream frosting, have been all the rage for weddings, birthdays, showers– just about any event or celebration. The style is definitely more organic and rustic, but is not short of being beautiful. What’s even better about naked cakes is how simple it can be to create them! I hear a lot of people say that they feel like they could “never” make the cakes they surface popular blogs and sites like Pinterest”. However, with just a few techniques and tricks, even a baker with little experience can put together a delicious and gorgeous looking cake. For my Spring Naked Cake Workshop, I wanted to emphasize exactly that. It was a lot of fun to share my knowledge with passionate learners. Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun putting on their aprons, rolling up their sleeves, and “getting naked”! To keep the cakes looking fresh and colorful, Scarlett & Grace provided some vibrant and lovely flowers that really made the cakes shine…plus, we had to put a little bit of “clothing” on our cakes, right?

Holiday cocktail from Signature Sips

 DIY holiday drinkDIY holiday drink

Hosting or having a DIY party (engagement, bachelorette or birthday) in your honor? If so, it’s time to get creative in the kitchen and concoct a signature beverage for your special day!

Offering a signature cocktail at an event can make all the difference. It shows your guests that you’re thinking about the little details, and it’s a super fun perk for those in attendance. A signature drink provides your family and friends (and sometimes strangers!) with an option that’s different from anything at their local pub.

Signature Sips has created a drink that’s easy to make and a crowd-pleaser. Read on to find out how to make “Plus 1” and enjoy!

DIY holiday drink

“Plus 1”

2/3 cup of fresh lemon juice

1 bunch of fresh rosemary

2/3 cup maple syrup

Steep rosemary for 30 minutes (save a few strands to garnish later on).

Remove rosemary and combine all ingredients in a large bowl or drink tupperware.

Mix with equal parts water, soda or spirit*. Recommended with whiskey. You can also add a splash to beer for a refreshing shandy.

*Note: You may either mix in the alcohol with the entire batch or on a per-glass basis.

To garnish:

Place one or two pieces of fresh rosemary in each glass. The rosemary can also double as a stirrer.

To serve:

A whiskey tumbler is a classic option for this cocktail, but not the only option. Mismatched pastel glassware, vintage tea cups or copper moscow mule mugs are also visually perfect to entice your guests to the bar, and keep ‘em coming back for more!

Signature Sips, based in Brooklyn, NY, is passionate about mixology and events. Their goal is to bring the elusive speakeasy experience — meaning care and time into each drink — to your event, but without the wait. Signature Sips’ boutique service works with couples and event planners to create a taste sensory experience via your bar. Any taste you can imagine, any flavor you can remember, Signature Sips will turn it into a lovely libation. Homemade with care, their versatile cocktails include nothing less than the freshest ingredients. These Brooklyn ladies value the importance of mocktails too, as they want to cater to all of your guests, even those not consuming alcohol. Let’s celebrate with taste!

My graphic black and white baby shower!

baby shower banner

I’m not one for a fuss being made over me, but I gotta say my baby shower was pretty damn awesome!  I dont think I’ve ever had a party so quintessentially ME before, and I’ve got my friends Minhee & Jainé to thank for their creative direction in it.  (I guess after working on a book together, you really get to know a person!)  Keep scrolling to see all the showery goodness from the day! (I’m going to keep the photos of guests to a minimum in case they’re camera shy, but there’s plenty of inspiration to be had)

The scene was really set with Minhee’s invitations for the day….using my favorite color green and a punch of graphic black and white for this baby boy, she used an idea from our book, Weddings in Color, as the basis.  I just love that oversized wax seal with a monogram she created!

Flowermuse provided the gorgeous white flowers that the girls arranged for the table in clusters.  I didn’t realize it then (there was so much going on!), but it was very similar to what I had done for my wedding, so it was a nice tie in to that.  It was also totally modern and easy to pull together too!

The monogram even carried out onto customized napkins and cocktail stirrers!

Minhee had asked my parents to send over pictures of me as a baby to blow up and hang around the space.  Green balloons and garlands she made added to the decor for the walls.

If a black and white cookie isn’t the perfect favor for a party like this, then I don’t know what is!

Shake & Share Media was on hand with an awesome photobooth for guests to turn their pictures into a guestbook for me.   I just love how all the pictures came out, and they made great souvenirs for guests as well!

I can’t remember when I first had a taste of Nine Cakes mint chocolate chip cake, but once I did, I knew I had to have it for whatever event I had coming up next!  Its so delicious, and the leftovers have been great for those minty pregnancy cravings I’ve been having.

The day went by so quickly, but it was definitely filled with lots of love!  Big thank you to all the hostesses for the baby shower: Minhee, Jainé, my mom, Raakhee, Anne, and Kiki!

Modern pink ombré baby shower

confetti baby shower invitation

Pink is a tough color for me.  I’ve always been a green girl myself, but when you’ve got a mama-to-be who absolutely LOVES pink, you make that mama happy!  Such was the case for the baby shower that Minhee from Paper+Cup and I threw for our dear friend (and book photographer) Jainé of Brklynview Photography!  Surprisingly enough, for never having thrown a baby shower before, it all came together pretty seamlessly….it certainly helps when you’ve got an unspoken language and understanding between your co-host after having worked together on a book for the last year!  Jainé already knew she wanted to do it at iCi, a local favorite that has the most perfect all white event space upstairs, so we just had to deck it out!  Minhee and I went for a modern pink, keeping it pretty simple but graphic at the same time.  She did the invitations and overall signage, while I handled the decor, flowers and favors.  With a little help from some friends, I think we pulled it off pretty well!

The invitations were silk screened in bright pink onto glassine envelopes that held pink confetti from Knot & Bow.  The guests loved it, and it gave a good idea of what was to come.

Minhee took sheets of acrylic and and back painted them using various techniques for table signage.  Even though each were a little different, they all looked cohesive by using the same pink and font for the decals on top.  She also had the great idea of getting baby photos of Jainé and tinting them in various shades of pink to hang around the space.

iCi has a lovely mirror in the space that needed some decorating, so with a bit of decal magic and a hot pink garland from Paper Fox LA, we jazzed it up nicely!

Since Jainé had mentioned once that she liked ombré, we figured that the most dynamic place to put that to work would be the centerpiece, especially knowing how iCi likes to set up their tables.  Out of curiosity, I wanted to see how difficult it would be to pull off something like this myself, so I worked with Flowermuse who provided all the gorgeous blooms for the day.  A few days before the event, they sent over boxes of peonies, ranunculus and roses, all perfectly packed and ready for prepping.  Depending on how full I wanted the blooms to get for the big day, they sent easy to follow directions on how to take care of the flowers and how to get them to open when I wanted.  Couldn’t have been simpler, and I had an apartment smelling like a fabulous flower shop for a few days to boot!  For vases, I ordered a bunch from a restaurant web supply store where bud vases were around a $1 each in varying shapes.  They ended up being an extra favor for guests at the end of the brunch too which was nice.   (This also would work really well for a bridal shower, just sayin’!)

Baby-K-Shower-Edited-3O2A0436die cut seating cards

The seating cards were a project I did on my Cricut Explore Air…once they were all cut out, I used some hot pink gouache paint and put my calligraphy skills to work writing out everyones name.

Minhee stamped all the cocktail napkins with our hashtag for the brunch #yaybabyk!

Years ago I had picked up all the copies I could find of Sharon Montroses’s Ménagerie book off Amazon because I always thought they’d make great baby shower guest books, and they really do!  Minhee added the fun bookmark so we could keep our spot.

To keep it a little exciting, we had 2 activities set up…one was a card where people would list wishes for the baby, and the other was a very competitive game of baby bingo!

Betsy of Nine Cakes (who ALSO worked on the book with us!) did this amazing confetti cake that was pink velvet inside!  So yummy, and so adorable on the little rabbit cake stand from Imm Living.  I worked with Little Cat Design Co. to come up with a cheeky cake topper that was playful and worked with our theme.

All the guests took home these custom colored pretzel sticks hand dipped by the ladies of Fatty Sundays….in ombré pink no less!

All in all, we had an awesome time with friends and family, and I might even appreciate pink a little more 🙂  Big thanks to Sasithon Photography who took all these great pictures!!

Mother’s Day flower inspiration | part 3

simple mothers day arrangement

This last arrangement is a little more intensive for the floral enthusiast, but great nonethless!  Using a trophy vase I found at Target for $5 (yay for sales!), we bumped up the “Mom is #1” theme with a paper award ribbon by artist Hayley Sheldon I had picked up at a Renegade Craft Fair years ago.  The flowers are lush, the settings are simple, and its a beautiful way to show Mom you appreciate her!

Mother’s Day flower inspiration | part 2

simple mothers day arrangement

Today’s arrangement is slightly different…instead of using vases, we used glasses & tumblers I already had, and added some height with a mini cake stand.  This is a great way to make use of odd cups you might have lying around…as long as you have a palette or theme going (here we went with graphic black, white and green), it will look cohesive.  The arrangements are small enough that you don’t have to be a pro to make them look good!

Mother’s Day flower inspiration 3 ways

simple mothers day arrangement

I dont know if I ever told you guys this, but Brooklyn Living was supposed to launch like a year or 2 ago.  Crazy right?  When starting a site there are always delays and nothing really goes according to plan, so while waiting for the site to get ready, my friend Alicia from Bows & Arrows in Dallas was visiting NYC and had a great idea to put together a shoot.   I loved it, grabbed my girl Jainé from Brklynview Photography to shoot it, and so with Mother’s Day just around the corner, thought it would be a great time to feature it!

Using the same exact flowers, Alicia put together 3 different ways to do a centerpiece from just a few flowers, to a plethora of them!  I’ll feature one a day this week so you can see what she did, and hope you can get some great inspiration for YOUR next celebration.

Today’s arrangement is the simplest, using some animal head vases I had purchased from Anthropologie a while back, and some lovely flowers.  This could easily be replicated with garden blooms or whatever you find foraging around your neighborhood, but has such a nice impact.

If you thought the 80’s were over, think again!  Just last week, Jove Meyer of Jove Meyer Events threw himself the raddest 30th birthday/2nd anniversary bash Brooklyn has ever seen.  All guests were asked to wear 80’s attire (think neon, side ponytails, and LEG WARMERS!!) and dance the night away….clearly everyone had a blast reliving what was obviously one of the best decades ever!!
